Space was cramped when we lifted and placed a new 200 tonnes cutterhead in the rock of the Hallandsås tunnel project. However, the tunnel drilling machine is again thundering along the 8.6 km stretch which is part of the new railway connection between Malmö and Gothenburg. We were asked to solve the task of lifting the new cutterhead into place.
A great challenge as the new 180 ton cutterhead section had to be moved and lifted within an underground area, which only allowed very few centimetres of workspace. Four hydraulic gantries operated by remote control became the solution to this task. With a total capacity of 1,000 tonnes, these gantries installed the cutterhead in place.
